The Salina Liberty announced a contract extension for their head coach Heron O’Neal on Wednesday, June 26.
According to a press release from the team’s home venue, Tony’s Pizza Events Center, O’Neal’s contract extension is for two years, running him through the end of the 2022 season. His original contract with the team, signed prior to the 2018 season was a three year deal through the end of the 2020 season.
Since taking over as the Liberty’s head coach, O’Neal has guided the team to a tremendous turnaround. The Liberty won just three total games in their first two seasons. O’Neal was brought in for the third season and since then, the team has a record of 18-8, which includes two postseason appearances (2018 and 2019). Under O’Neal, the team has finished in the top spot of the CIF’s north division for two consecutive seasons.
“We are so excited and happy to get a commitment from Coach O’Neal,” said Liberty General Manager Francis Flax in Wednesday’s release. “To have one of the best coaches in indoor football want to coach here in Salina speaks volumes.”
O’Neal’s accomplishments as a head coach in the world of indoor football speak for themselves. O’Neal won back-to-back IFL United Bowl championships as the head coach of the Billings Outlaws in 2009 and 2010. He also guided the the IFL’s Colorado Ice to four consecutive postseason appearances from 2011-2014.
The Salina Liberty finished the 2019 regular season with an 8-4 record and will play for the CIF Northern Conference Championship on Saturday, June 29 at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina against their rivals, the Omaha Beef. Game time is slated for a 6:35 PM CST kickoff. The Beef also closed out the regular season for an 8-4 record, but were swept by the Liberty during the regular season.
